ABOUT

Driven by creative technology and real-time computational systems, this project explores “Typographic Biomechanics” the idea that a letterform’s visual characteristics can define how it moves and behaves. Weight, curvature and stroke geometry become physical properties such as mass, resistance and elasticity, shifting typography from something static into something that can move, react and behave.

The project takes shape through two connected experiences: The Kinetic Builder, a web-based tool for creating and experimenting with typographic behaviours, and The Vivarium, an interactive spatial installation where these forms come alive. Through gesture and voice recognition, visitors can disturb the letterforms, while anything they say is captured and written directly onto the forms in real time.

Together, the systems turn typography into a responsive environment one that can be seen, moved, spoken to and played with.

The Kinetic Builder functions as the procedural core, defining the biomechanical parameters, physical limits, and kinetic profiles for each typographic species. To eliminate data latency between systems, both the parametric controls of the Builder and the spatial environment of the Vivarium were constructed on a unified, native HTML and JavaScript physics engine. This shared digital architecture allows the mathematical rulesets engineered in the Builder to drive the behavior of the letterforms in the spatial installation seamlessly.

The physical Vivarium translates these procedural rules into an interactive environment. Configured with real-time gesture-tracking sensors and integrated audio synthesis, the setup maps visitor movements directly into the digital space. As audience members enter the interaction zone, their hand gestures act as external forces that physically disrupt the living typographic species, making the programmed properties of mass, friction, and elasticity tangible in real time.

Beyond Static Type was designed not as a static screen tool, but as a dynamic framework capable of scaling across different mediums. Transitioning the procedural physics engine from a two-dimensional browser canvas into a three-dimensional physical environment required rethinking spatial density, user proximity, and scale. In the screen environment, letterforms interact with viewport boundaries; in spatial environments, they interact with ambient depth, spatial acoustics, and real-time physical human presence. This shift proves that procedural typography can adapt seamlessly from personal interface screens to monumental spatial architecture without losing its anatomical integrity.
